Water Resistant Hearing Aids- Great for Sports Enthusiasts and Outdoor Workers

Water can cause major problems for hearing aid users.  High humidity causes earwax to accumulate on the hearing aid.  A few drops of water that leak into the hearing aid can destroy the delicate internal mechanism and result in a large repair bill.  There is no such thing as a waterproof hearing aid because there has to be a way for sound to go through the hearing aid.  If the hearing aid were completely sealed, there would be no way for the sound to go through the device.  However, a few companies have developed water resistant hearing aids.

If you tend to sweat a lot in warm weather or when exercising, the beads of sweat can get into your hearing aid damage the electrical components.  Water resistant hearing aids are a great option for people with outside jobs like construction workers, highway workers, bus drivers, taxi drivers, mail carriers and amusement park employees.  Fire fighters are now using water resistant hearing aids because of the heavy amounts of water they encounter when fighting a fire.

Water resistant hearing aids have many features to aid in preventing water, sweat, humidity and moisture from damaging a costly hearing aid.  There are clip-on microphone covers available.  The covers are made of GORE, the same product found in water resistant gloves and shoes.  The covers will also protect the hearing aid from dirt and dust.  Other manufactures coat the internal mechanisms with a product that resists water and blocks moisture from getting into the hearing aid.  Another model has been designed with a seal to protect the receiver without interfering with the transmission of sounds.  All of these products do an outstanding job of preventing water, moisture, humidity and sweat from seeping into a hearing aid and damaging its sensitive mechanism.  However, none of these hearing aids are designed to be used in a swimming pool.

Water resistant hearing aids are very helpful to those who like to play sports because they can block the sweat from getting inside the hearing aid.  In addition to wearing a water resistant hearing aid, there are other options to use to ensure that your ear canal stays dry.  There is a spray product that will help to keep your ear dry.  It is a good idea to always have a waterproof bag with you. For example, if you are at an amusement park and want to ride the water rides, you can remove your hearing aid and store in the bag.  You can enjoy the ride and not worry about your hearing aid.
