Invisible
Hearing Aids - No One has to Know
Have
you begun to notice the irritating signs of hearing loss
in your daily life? Do you struggle to hear sounds in
the distance? Are you constantly asking friends to
repeat themselves when having a conversation in a busy
restaurant or shopping mall? Are you worried about what
people would think if you started wearing a hearing aid,
but don’t want to sacrifice the communication and
connections in your professional and social lives?
Thanks
to huge advances in hearing instrument technology there
are alternatives available to the traditional
over-the-ear hearing aid. These are known as invisible
hearing aids and might be just the discreet solution
you’re looking for.
There
are a wide variety of reasons why invisible hearing aids
are more desirable than traditional hearing instruments.
Wearers of traditional external hearing devices can’t
wear them while swimming or showering, and most models
are extremely uncomfortable to wear while sleeping.
Brisk
winds can also be a problem for traditional hearing
aids, often creating the sensation of someone blowing in
a microphone, and feedback from wearing a hat or helmet,
or hugging a close friend can produce an uncomfortable
whistling sound in your ear.
A company in Boulder, Colorado, called Otologics,
has developed a revolutionary technology that is not
only invisible, it’s also waterproof due to the fact that
the device- and all of its related circuitry, battery,
and microphone- are all implanted within the user’s head.
As the world’s first truly concealed hearing aid, the
Otologics device is contained in a capsule that is
surgically implanted behind the ear, beneath the skin.
When
sound is picked up by the microphone, it is processed
and then sent to a transducer in the middle ear. When it
reaches the transducer, the sound acts as an artificial
eardrum causing the middle ear bones to vibrate, thus
delivering the sounds to the
brain.
If
you’re not quite ready for invisible hearing aids that
are implanted in your head, there are other barely
visible options on the hearing instrument market. These
include models that fit completely in the ear canal and
are flesh colored, making theme nearly impossible to
detect in normal, everyday activities.
There
are also nearly invisible models that employ a slim,
sleek design to fit perfectly behind the ear lobe, with
a completely clear tube reaching into the ear canal. As
always, it’s a good idea to consult with a certified
audiologist to test your current level of hearing loss
and determine the best device for your
needs.
